Delayed taxpayers will have until July 17th to access the nearly $1.5 billion unclaimed 2019 tax refunds.

Approximately 1.5 million taxpayers will have until Monday, July 17th to complete their filings in order to access the unclaimed refunds of 2019. The amount of unclaimed funds goes up to 1.5 billion dollars, which the agency estimates to be an average of $893 per taxpayer. Moreover, some low-income taxpayers might be eligible for as much as $6,557 in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), if their 2019 income qualifies. People who missed tax filing during the past years due to the pandemic need to act quickly because refunds can be held for those that have not yet filed tax returns for 2020 and 2021. Once the deadline passes, the unclaimed money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.
