The IRS warns taxpayers of a new scam pursuing identity theft.
A new scam scheme has been alerted by the Security Summit, a coalition between the IRS, state tax administrators, and the nation’s tax industry. In this new method, scammers attempt to obtain taxpayers’ sensitive information through a letter that pretends to be concerning an unclaimed refund from the IRS. These letters include fake IRS contact information and seek very specific private data that can be used for identity theft, like detailed pictures of your driver’s license. Some of the warning signs to recognize these fraud letters include odd punctuation and a mixture of fonts as well as inaccuracies.
