Florida Senator proposes a new fee to EVs to compensate for gas-tax lost.

A bill proposed by Florida Senator Ed Hooper last week suggests introducing a yearly registration fee for electric vehicles. The bill will be reviewed during the 2024 legislative session in January. If approved, electric vehicle owners will have to pay an additional $200 registration fee annually on top of the regular fee. As of 2029, the fee will increase to $250. The proposed fee aims to compensate for the loss of gas tax dollars, which the state uses to fund transportation projects. A previous study by the Senate predicted that the rise in electric vehicle usage could lead to a decline of 5.6% to 20% in “motor-fuel-based revenue streams” by 2040.
