Florida May Participate in the 2024 IRS Direct File Pilot Program

The IRS has unveiled details about the Direct File pilot program for the 2024 tax season, and Florida taxpayers may be eligible to participate. The program is part of the IRS’s ongoing efforts to improve the tax-filing experience, and it will allow certain Florida taxpayers the opportunity to electronically file their federal tax returns directly with the IRS for free. The program already counts with the collaboration of Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New York, and taxpayers in nine other states without state income tax, such as Alaska, Florida, and Texas, may also have the opportunity to participate. Eligibility for the pilot is determined by factors like income type, and it covers key income sources such as W-2 wage income, Social Security, unemployment compensation, and certain tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. Direct File will be available in both English and Spanish and will be tested with a select group of taxpayers.
