A Closer Look at the IRS Direct File Pilot Program
For Tax Season 2024, the IRS will conduct a limited-scope pilot to assess customer support and technology needs for its new Direct Filing program. The agency’s goal during this pilot is to provide this service to eligible taxpayers with straightforward tax situations and relatively simple tax returns. Taxpayers who received income from an employer; income from Social Security or railroad retirement; unemployment compensation; and interest on investments of up to $1,500, will be eligible for this pilot. The participating states are Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New York, but also, taxpayers in states without an income tax, such as Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming, may be eligible to participate.
