IRS Reminds Taxpayers Affected by Disasters: File by May 1

The IRS issued a reminder that individuals and businesses in federally declared disaster areas — including all of Florida — automatically have until May 1, 2025, to file their 2024 federal income tax returns and make payments. This extension applies to affected taxpayers in a total of twelve states, including Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. No action is needed to receive this relief if the taxpayer’s address of record is within a FEMA-declared disaster area. The IRS emphasized that while this extension provides more time to file, payments are still due by May 1 to avoid penalties. Those needing additional time to file beyond May 1 must submit a paper Form 4868 by that date.
