Providence Residents Voice Concerns Over Potential Tax Raise

A substantial number of Providence residents gathered at the Rhode Island State House this week to express opposition to proposed legislation that would permit the city to exceed the statewide 4% tax levy cap in fiscal year 2026. The bill, sponsored by Representative Rebecca Kislak and supported by Mayor Brett Smiley, seeks to authorize an increase of up to 8% in property taxes to address financial obligations stemming from a recent settlement with the Rhode Island Department of Education. Mayor Smiley described the measure as necessary due to extraordinary fiscal challenges, including years of underfunding in public education. The House Municipal Government and Housing Committee has held the bill for further study as public hearings and city budget discussions continue.
