IRS informed the end of unannounced visits to taxpayers.

This week the IRS notified the end of most unannounced visits to taxpayers, effective immediately. This change arrived as a part of a major policy modification described in the IRS Strategic Operating Plan, that was developed after the recent funding from the Inflation Reduction Act. It pretends to decrease public confusion about these visits, which was another opportunity for scammers who sometimes impersonated IRS revenue officers. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel also remarked that this measure not only “will improve overall safety for taxpayers”, but also for IRS employees that often encountered dangerous situations when conducting this duty. The unannounced visits will be replaced by mailed appointment letters (known as 725-B) which will allow taxpayers to be more prepared when facing these meetings. Only in a few unique circumstances, like service of summonses and subpoenas, the visits will still take place.
