IRS warns about new surge of tax scams during the summer.

In a new effort to keep taxpayers aware of potential fraud, the IRS warned about the recent wave of scams occurring this summer. Officers from the agency pointed out that these scams may come from many sources like email, text messages, phone calls, or even social media; and they also use a variety of topics that can catch people’s attention. Recently, the most common ones are those scams constructed around the third round of Economic Impact Payments (that ended two years ago), the “Claim your tax refund online”, and the message warning that your tax return has been “banned” by the IRS. These schemes can be recognizable by two particulars: they usually contain spelling errors and awkward phrasing, and might potentially have a questionable link requiring sensitive information.
