IRS Advise Taxpayers to Secure Their 2025 Returns with an IP PIN
The IRS advises all taxpayers to enhance their identity security for the 2025 tax season by signing up for an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This six-digit number adds a layer of protection against tax-related identity theft by ensuring that only the rightful taxpayer, identified through the IRS Online Account, can file using their Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification number. The agency informs that tyers should sign up by November 23, 2024, as the IP PIN system will pause for maintenance until early January 2025, when new IP PINs are issued. Once obtained, taxpayers must use their IP PIN on all federal returns for that year and keep it confidential, sharing it only with the IRS or tax preparers. For those unable to register online, alternative in-person methods are available at Taxpayer Assistance Centers.
