IRS Urges Taxpayers to Claim Their 2021 Refunds Before April Deadline
The IRS announced that over 1.1 million taxpayers have unclaimed refunds for the 2021 tax year, with an estimated total of more than $1 billion. The median refund amount is $781, and eligible taxpayers must file their 2021 tax returns by April 15, 2025, to claim it. Many low- and moderate-income individuals may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), potentially increasing their refunds. Taxpayers who haven’t filed for 2022 and 2023 may have their refunds held. To retrieve necessary tax documents, individuals can access their IRS Online Account, request transcripts, or contact employers and financial institutions. Unclaimed refunds will be forfeited to the U.S. Treasury after the deadline. Taxpayers should act promptly to claim their money before it’s too late.
