Employer Tax Filing: Key Information and Deadline Reminders from the IRS

As tax season approaches, the IRS also issued a reminder of the January 31 deadline for employers to submit wage statements and forms for independent contractors to the government. Employers must file copies of Form W-2 and Form W-3 with the Social Security Administration by this date. The deadline also applies to Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC filed with the IRS for reporting non-employee compensation. The new electronic filing requirements, effective for W-2s required in 2024, mandate that businesses filing 10 forms or more must file electronically. Extensions for this deadline must be requested by submitting Form 8809 by January 31, and filing by the deadline aids in fraud prevention and helps avoid penalties.
